How we are designed.
We Build Together is being designed for institutional durability across decades. The operating principles, governance philosophy, and capture-resistance design are intended to allow the work to continue regardless of the political, funding, or media environment in any given year.
Designed to survive.
Each initiative is being designed to survive the loss of any single funder, partner, or administration. The structural mechanisms include federated chapter structures that force capture to be attempted in many places simultaneously, diversified funding with concentration caps (no single funder above 25 percent of operating revenue measured rolling three-year average), and mission codification in governing documents amendable only by supermajority. These mechanisms are not novel. They are drawn from the structural lessons of American institutions that have resisted capture across many decades: the Federal Reserve System, the Cooperative Extension Service, the rural electric cooperatives, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Park Service.
What we will measure, and how.
Every operational claim We Build Together will make is intended to be grounded in a published methodology document. Restored acres at year three, households served by the Provisions Cooperative, maternity deserts reduced by the Care Exchange, volunteer fire departments supported by the Civic Trust, each is intended to be measured against a named methodology with version history, an audit process, and explicit statement of limitations. The methodology documents are intended to be published through Build Together's Standard primitive and reviewed annually.
Multi-stakeholder boards. Long terms. External referees.
Governance is being designed to make capture difficult. Boards are intended to include multiple constituencies with countervailing interests, with no single constituency holding more than one-third of seats. Terms are intended to be long, staggered, and non-renewable where appropriate, to insulate governance from political cycles. External referee groups, professional societies, academic advisory boards, journalism review boards, are intended to provide outside-the-institution accountability.
National institution. Local work.
We do not operate at the scale of national rhetoric. The Provisions Cooperative is intended to serve regional producer-buyer relationships. The Neighbor Reserve is intended to organize at county scale. The Civic Trust is intended to operate inside the local institutions that absorb shocks. The Care Exchange is intended to match clinical capacity at the catchment scale where access gaps actually appear. The Trades Cooperative is intended to operate at the state-and-region scale where credentialing actually happens. The institution is national. The work is local.
Decades, not quarters.
We Build Together is being designed for decades. The institutions we look to as references, the Federal Reserve at 113 years, the Cooperative Extension Service at 111 years, the rural electric cooperatives at 91 years, the Smithsonian at 180 years, these are institutions that have outlived the political moments of their founding. We do not expect to be judged by what we have accomplished in our first year. We expect to be evaluated by whether the institution we are building is still serving its mission in the year MMC.
